Tell us a little bit about yourself and Kidpreneur Entrepreneurship.
Thanh Tran is a serial entrepreneur who founded Kidpreneur®, two software companies and D-NewTech, an organization which aim to inspire Detroit’s startup growth. The idea for Kidprenuer® came about when he realized there were not enough opportunities available for young children to learn about entrepreneurship and new technologies; especially computer programming. He believes that starting young could build a life-long interest and creates future job creators.
Kidpreneur® teaches kids aged 13 and under about entrepreneurship and the latest technology including coding, app development, game design, web development, robotics programming and more. The goal is to educate kids about technology and how they can build businesses using the technology they like.
What was the inspiration for your project?
I have kids, I love entrepreneurship and I love technology. Coding is in such high demand right now, and it’s important we encourage kids at a young age. That’s the way I want to raise my kids and I believe other parents do too: to become future innovators and job creators.
How long did it take to create your project?
We started Kidpreneur® back in summer 2013 by providing entrepreneurship, coding and gaming workshops in public libraries. There were a tremendous amount of interest and within 3 months we build unique curriculums for our 9 week classes and then eventually summer camps. We’ll have some our student’s presenting businesses, video games, Minecraft servers and more during the Maker Faire Detroit.
As a maker, what inspires you?
I love seeing ideas come to life … that’s why I believe I’m an entrepreneur. And with Kidpreneur®, I get to see that everyday with young, inspirational kids.
What are you most looking forward to at Maker Faire Detroit this year?
I am always excited to go to Maker Faire Detroit because I and my kids get to see cool creations from different artists. This year, it’s more special because we are exhibiting at the event and have workshops on game development, Minecraft technology, robotics and more.
